Mise-en-scene
I chose to comment on the mise-en-scene of the first episode of the TV show "Hannibal". The show follows the relationship between FBI profiler Will Graham and cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter.
The show opens with Will Graham recounting a home invasion case to college students. Will Graham, using his imagination, replicates the movements of the killer standing outside the victims house. This scene shows low-key lighting, creating a dark atmosphere matching the actions of Will Graham.
In the episode, Will Graham's personality is shown as someone who isn't good with people and is nervous. His clothing and appearance in the show represents this, his clothes appearing more disheveled when compared to other characters like Hannibal or Jake Crawford.
Around halfway through the episode, we are introduced to Hannibal, through a scene of him eating dinner. This scene uses shallow space and low-key lighting to give the viewer a unsettling sense of distance between the camera and Hannibal.
The scene where Hannibal is preparing human lungs for his dinner is an example of how setting can reflect a character's emotional state of mind. The kitchen Hannibal is in is black and gray, these colors help reflect Hannibal's coldness towards what he is doing.
